Here, Loaderror tells that he was a bit sceptic when he heard that Amigademos were to compete with pcdemos at The Gathering. He speaks of Amigas as "guttercomputers" and overall giving the impression that pc is a much better computer. Right, it's truř "e that pc's are faster than most common Amigas, if people ever left that Windows operatingsystem alone, it could perhaps even be called a fast computer, but that's another issue. What I'm heading for here is why do sceners need such a fast computer, and what's the big problem competing with demos for faster computers than your own? I hardly think that you need a very fast computer in order to make a fine demo. We have several examples of this, just look at the old demos released on s0DAmiga 500 and you will find that in effects and sometimes even design, these were much better than any of today's demos. Names like Andromeda with D.O.S, Sequential, and not to forget Nexus7 should prove this. I also think that there's a lot impressing which has happened and still do on the Commodore 64, although I must admit that I sadly haven't been able to follow that scene closely. If I just got a way of connecting a C64 diskdrive to my Amiga, I would gladly download more 64-pro+E5ductions, copy them to read C64-disks and watch them on my C128D. So, I think that it's still the ideas that decided whether a demo is good or not, not the hardware you run it on. It's rather the other way around, the faster computer, the more boring demos get. Just take a look at today's pcdemos. Almost all of them contain nothing but 3d-graphics. The makers are getting tired of painting textures, so they shove some text on their objects, and release a demo with the same 3d-effects{5N shown over and over again, just with another texture (text) on it, and do nothing to push the computer to it's limits. This was once the big thing on the demoscene, you were to tweak out every possible effect on as few rasterlines as possible. Today on the pc-scene, who will ever see what their computer can do before they buy a faster one? What I like the most here are perhaps the 256 byte intros, which seem to have become popular on the pc. They have interesting effects, but ofcourmnse no music and little variation. What makes these productions more enjoyable than most other demos on pc is that the effects are more varied. And ofcourse, putting an effect into 256 bytes should alone be credited as impressive. There are not many intros like this on Amiga (256 byte that is), and there are several reasons for this. It's among other things loadhunks that take more room on Amiga. Although I have not seen much intel assemblycode, it seems that pc-people also still can ʱۙorg their code (I guess it's remapped to another adress upon loading), they can set up a screen by making an exeption after a couple of lines of code and so on. So, this is perhaps a field where pc-people have an advantage, although there have been made 256 byte intros on Amiga, for instance you can take a look at Eurochart 44, there you will find both a 256 byte intro and the sourcecode for it. Take your time to read the appropriate article in the mag too, where there's a lot of thitlnking showing that some people still have their imagination left. Having said that about the 256 byte intros, from here it goes downwards with the pc. As said, almost everything is about 3d-graphics, boring as that is. Also, the coders are not the only ones who have a (too) easy time on the pc-scene. I wonder who handpixels their images the way it should be done. I myself have never been a good graphicsartist, and with the programs available on pc, I would be an even worse one. Ther kpe are no programs dedicated to handpixelling images, atleast not any I have found. I have also wondered sometimes when I have downloaded a pc-demo and taken a look at the files. Sometimes the music is a regular mp3-sample (because that's what these files really are, crunched samples). I then wonder what the musician has used to make the tune. I don't have anything against synths and other musical equipment, but atleast when you have a module, fourchannel or multichannel, I have a mo vDre certain feeling that this is the work of the musician and not a rip. It might be all programs like Magix MusicMaker and the likes which have got me sceptic, and I might have no reason to be so, but this is how the case is. So, to sum up shortly, I think that there's a lot more to demoscening than owning the fastest computer or computertype. If I want something fast, I would rather go for a Pro-Modified car for dragracing. It's shit expensive but so are pc's if you need to upgrade R\ them all the time, no matter how much cheaper it is now compared to before. aEZB[017pMikrobi by Moods Plateau Reviewer by Rumrunner/Void l This intro reminds me of several productions. First, the funky tune that lasts through the whole intro reminds me of music from productions by Abyss. Also colourchoices and design in some cases remings me of demos coming from that group. Effectswise, I like this intro alot. It has very little 3d-effects (if any) which ofcourse is a good thing. 3d belongs to Doom-alike games, not productions on the Amigascene. And while I'm on t;Lhe topic of effects, the guys in Moods Plateau seems to have the same opinion as I as to what kind of effects should an Amigaproduction have. I even saw a kind of reverse floodfill which I really liked. You can also find resizing cubes in the intro, they are used for everything from displaying chessfields to names in the greetingspart. Circles also make up a ball, it reminds me a little of the interferencepart in both of the Ray Of Hopedemos from Majic 12. Another issue one can disH$cuss till death is how long should each part show on screen. This intro suits me well at this point, none of the effects are shown too long, this makes for an intro that's enjoyable watching more than once. I cannot think of anything more boring in a sceneproduction than 3d-effects showing for what feels like about half an hour, then seeing almost the same effect shown with some other graphics. Mikrobi is a fairly short production, which I think is good. Moods Plateau shows the effe[cts they wish to show, then end the production. There's no point in wasting time, so it ends when what's interesting is ended. I'm also running both a newsserver and ircserver here, the newsserver contains groups for discussing stuff regarding the Amigascene and also other topics. Just take a look to se if it's something you're interested in. The ircserver is a local one, meaning it won't connect to other servers. That's the intended way of having it, I would like a server where the right people can meet, without being bothered by uninteresting things. NOTE : As of releasing this mag, I'm switching" server, from a desktopcomputer to an IBM Netfinity 5500 M20 server, intended for such purposes. It features scsi hardwareraid, ide softwareraid and I'll use it both for purposes on my local net here at home and also for services to internet, so there's alot to set up and I don't know exactly when everything will be available again. Also note that I'm running a filter effectively stopping people from places known for "hacking" (well, it's too lame stuff they're doing, can't really call that hacking, newertheless, it's unwanted traffic), so if you cannot connect to rumrunner.mine.nu, send me a mail and I'll correct the filters. In that case it's more certain than not, it's just being a little too effective. T B[027p}'Yet more mysteries By Rumrunner/VOID l When I coded the first issue of Versus, the chart made in cooperation between us in Void and Nukleus, I came across a rather strange (or perhaps not so strange) phenomenon. Well, it all worked good until I added some music. What happened was that once in a while, the computer crashed. I lost no code, as I'm used to save everytime before running changed code, something every assemblycoder soon learns to do. What was strange was that when addinVg some code, the mag hung upon exit, even if the code wasn't run. Adding other code that did run fixed it until yet more code was added and so on it went. Well, I had to find out about this one before doing much else, since it was almost impossible to work with the code. The mag ran fine, but the crash and guru entered upon exiting. Finally, after looking through my interrupts and whatever was run outside, I finally found the bug. I use the old ciamusic.s Protrackerreplayer which LWars "Zap" Hamre coded back in the good old days. It seems that this player messes up some bytes after the module. It doesn't always occur, that's what's strange. I haven't looked into the replaycode, but my best bet is that perhaps some calculations fail when the module is not longword-aligned (it's always word-aligned ofcourse). You know, it's always fun to find solutions to a problem that takes less rastertime, and when it works when you work with it, you don't think about such problems. Since Versus is a production running from file, it can be allocated into whatever memory the operating systems finds, ofcourse separated by sections demanding certain types of memory (chip or fast), so my problem should not happen all the time, since it's not very likely that it will be loaded at the same position all the time. However, in my case, ofcourse it was loaded at the same position, when the computer first hung, I loaded the same programs again from the start, so thޠe same memoryareas were free. Well, the problem was easy to solve when I first found it, I didn't bother looking into the replayerroutine, I really don't like to change code that has been with us for so long. What I did was simply to reserve some bytes right after the module, and this magically solved the problem. Having found out that, I also found out that this was the very same thing that caused the Christmas Intro I once released to hang sometimes. I started thinking about this for a while, and came up with something I wanted to share with you. After the idea of publishing freely distribuable software came about, it didn't take long before people started wanting to earn money on this, and so companies"- started to distribute software, taking prices that more than covered the distribution cost, which was the idea of the concept of free software. Public domain, shareware and freeware, although beeing different in some aspects, all fell into the claws of the commercial world. Ofcourse, there were some enthusiasts that did want to spread the software without earning money from it, the most known to Amigapeople might be Fred Fish, who built up an impressive collection. But, to judge frt(om articles in the mag which dealt most with this topic, Grapevine from LSD, it seems that such companies were the exception instead of the rule. Thinking back I remember a catalogue which I still think I have somewhere. It came in the mail sometime in the late eighties, and the prices were not the ones expected when this was supposed to be freely distribuable software (freeware and public domain) and "try before you buy" software. The prices could be upto a couple of hundred kroner Ў(about twenty pounds) for a couple of disks. Since this company had specialised in pc-software, the disks were also in the 5 1/4 inch format, which was common at that time. Now, everybody knows that disks were more expensive at that time, but not that much. Also keep in mind that the postage was lower, and you soon find out who sat with the biggest profit, it was certainly not the coder. Right, when bbs'es became more widely used, the public domain companies lost much of their custonmer-base as these got other ways to get the same software. Modems were expensive and so were calling the bbs in question, especially if it was not a local one, but it seems that many people still preferred to let the telephone company and the modem-makers to get the money instead of the pd-companies. There were still people left though that distributed software by mailorder, and this also included "our" (the scene's) productions. That's the reason why demos (for instance Desert Drea饹m from Kefrens) and diskmags (like Grapevine from LSD) had special notes in to describe rules and/or frighten off pd-companies from benefiting on others work. Now, for many people pd-companies were the only way of getting productions and them wanting to pay for it means that they must truly have been interested in the scene. But we all know what happened a bit later. Internet arrived for everybody and suddenly it was no use ordering from a company anymore. People got used to get on 6)Gan ftpserver and download the stuff they wanted and/or download it directly from the homepage of the makers of the wares in question. Let's think for a minute about how the state would be if there were still pd-companies about. For all I know, there might still be some, but I have never heard from them in years. Even though they have taken illegal benefit in other people's works, there was one good thing that could come out of it. The companies could market the products and spread t^?hem to people who perhaps wouldn't have seen for instance a demo from what we know as the scene. Today, it's most likely that pd-companies wouldn't spread files on disks, instead they would use cdroms. I remember all too well the first years after cdroms became available for pc. In addition to the occasional encyclopedia or moviedatabase, most cdroms (often sold in sets of 12) contained perhaps 5 megabytes worth of files. After that time, the pc-market has found ways of occupying mor ҂ original quote 'Computers will take a big part in the future.' It seems he was right. My Dad was a locksmith and I should never use my hands in order to earn money. That was the reason behind. I have been in groups like Looker House, Arcade, Altern and so on. Well, I don`t really remember 'em all. I complety stopped all scene activities in 1999 when I start &2Tjed a drug career with a friend of mine - another reason was the depressive Amiga scene, where everyone just talked about the 'dying Amiga scene'. From that point I attended techo partys every weekend and mixed different chemicals like LSD, shrooms, amphetamine and all the other party "utilities". After a short two week break in apsychiatry, I recognized that it can't be the sense of life amd stopped all this shit. I had to reorganize my whole life, but fall into a heavy weed problem 'w* for seven years. Last year I met Slapshot again and got a link to Boondocks. I just wanted to do after all the years some Ascii again - just for fun. And the story continued until now. I had left Aerosol after releasing "asl-neu.txt" and revitalized my own group named "aridweed". Ghandy: Wow! Thank you for being so honest and revealing us the background of your story. Please tell us, what's so fascinating for you speaking about the Scene. If people manage to send me about 4-6 articles, I'll fill in with what I have (I write when I feel like it, not when deadline gets close) and release. It works, and people so lazy they cannot be bothered to use their keyboard for those functions are most likely to never do anything for the scene anyway, so I really don't care. Put an escapesign (ascii 27) in front of the command and then : To get a line on screen, like the one above, use the l command. To change colours, simply use 0 through 2 To insert a picture, first convert it to raw format, then use the following : b11112222filename Where 1111 is the width of the picture in bytes and 2222 is the height of the picture in lines. Filename is CFGL_where you put the name of the file. It's important that you use four digits all of the time, or else it will not work out. For instance, if the picture is 10 bytes wide and 40 lines high, use 00100040. To change the colourpalette according to the colours used in the picture, use an iffconverter to save out the colours separately (don't save them in the picture), and then load the file into an assembler. Change all of the dc.w's so that the first colour is the one written to colour fiCGFEve ($dff188, referred to as $0188 in the dc.w list). Cut out the one written to colour0 ($dff180) through colour4 ($dff186), as these colours are kept unchanged all of the time. Now, you should have twelve colours in the list. The next step is to remove all of the colourregister, so you only have the colourvalues left. Assemble this and write out the file with the same name as the picture name, just add .f at the end. The file should be 24 bytes long. Remember to use four bitplanes aColl of the time, or else the picture will most likely just look like a mess on the screen. Right, that should be the most important to think of, in according to keeping the lines shorter than 75 characters. One more thing though, for all of the commands except the drawline command, you need to put a space at the end, if not, you will lose the next character on screen (for instance if you have changed colours) and the code will not find the correct filename for pictures. Have fun H I*UTSRQPONMLKJIB[023pHJQ/X and windowmanagers By Rumrunner/VOID l We all know and love the Workbench on our dear Amigas. The situation is quite different in unix. It's all textmode, and even though single programs can open their own graphicsscreen, almost none does. To get a graphical gui, you need X. This is a set of routines that does almost everything, except managing windows and giving you a blowjob. So, in order to move windows, close them, and flipping through them, you need to run a windowmanager HK0RLon top of x. There are several to choose from. One named twm comes with x. It mostly sucks. What you get is a frame around your windows, and you can pop a window to front by clicking in it or on it's titleline. You can press the left mousebutton to get a menu, for instance for starting programs. That's about it, no icons, background- pictures or the likes. Next, there are windowmanagers like mwm and fvwm, which is basically much of the same stuff. I have never liked any of them. ThHL ere's another windowmanager that goes by the name of Amiwm, which tries to look like our Workbench. While it might do a decent job in some areas, it's far from usable. You can iconify windows, and you have the topline from Workbench, but you cannot get icons for starting programs from, or entering directories, atleast not in any usable fashion. Also, it default makes the active window the one under your mousepointer, which irritates me. You have to write a file named .amiwmrc in yourHMsI homedirectory and put : 1 focus : clicktotype0 in it to get the default handling of Amiga's Workbench. Kde, the K Desktop Environment is a windowmanager and much more. It can do most everything, you have icons, backgroundpictures, and kdeprograms speak to eachother in quite a decent fashion. However, this is all written in c++, so it's dead slow. About the only times my computers use virtual memory is when running kde (or ofcourse some javashite). You also cannot install justHNzB parts of kde in a decent manner. Kde itself spreads the code which you have to compile in several archives. Kdelibs gives you all the libraries you need. Then, kdebase gives you all the necessary stuff, like the windowmanager, a filemanager, kdm (a graphical loginmanager) and lots of other stuff, among them some texteditors. If you need some networking tools, you can install kdenetwork, and so on. It's been a long time since I used kde as a windowmanager, and I doubt if I ever will HOG do so again, I have found better alternatives. However, I still have kde installed because of some of the programs. The thing is that the kde filerequester can open and save files on remote computers easily. If you want to reach a computer by ftp, you can simply type 1 ftp://username@computer.com0 in the pathfield, and then select the file you want to edit or whatever. You can also reach computers by scp, using fish://username@computer.com. For instance when writing php or similaHPJr, this can come in handy to quickly change code on a remote computer. Gnome is in many areas similar to kde, but it's faster and you can choose what you want to install in a much easier way. The gnomefolks themselves separate gnomeplatform and gnomedesktop. Gnomeplatform is mostly libraries and programs strongly associated with them. This is the stuff you need to run most programs, since almost everything except the programs that comes with kde uses gnomelibraries for filerequesterHQ߾w|s, pulldownmenus, buttons and whatever. If you also want the windowmanager, you will find the stuff you need in gnomedesktop. And like said, you can install the parts you want/need for other programs. Gnome also seems faster than kde, perhaps not so strange since it's not c++, but rather pure c. Ofcourse it's not assemblerspeed, but faster is better even though it's not vastly faster. One thing that really pisses me off with gnome is it's filerequesters. It only shows files with naH R,mes where the letters are in utf8-format. I never use utf8, and so, if I use , or in the filenames, these files doesn't show. It's possible to set an environmentvariable to force the requesters to use other charactersets, but I don't like having to do so. I could ofcourse use utf8 all the way around, but it would irritate the shit out of me using two bytes to save letters in filenames which could have been saved using one byte. I have chosen to use the windowmanager named EnligH SAhtenment. This can do most of what you want to. You can use theme to make it look the way you want to, personally, I currently use Ebench, which gives me windowborders and controlbuttons similar to Workbench, both in looks and placement (I strongly hate having the closebutton on the right side of the window). Other popular themes are macos themes, it seems there are alot of them out. The only thing I don't like about Enlightenment is that you cannot chose to select active window by H T Ϲclicking in it without it popping to front. If you prefer to automatically activate the window your mouse is over, you don't have to let it pop to front if you don't want it to. There are sadly no icons in Enlightenment, but I solved that with a program called idesk. You have to run it when you start your windowmanager, either as part of your startupscript or by hand. You can use whatever pngimage you want to as icon, and they don't have to be the same size, this is the first time IH K4 have seen that possible on anything besides Workbench. The icons are purely for starting programs, and you cannot use them to enter a directory, atleast not without starting a filemanager for the selected directory from it. Except from that, it's quite nice. There are lots of other windowmanagers, like xfce, waimea, blackbox and fluxbox, but none of them have impressed me much. Oh, all the things we don't have to worry about on Amiga. U V$Cba`_^]\[ZYXWVB[022pUWi3Unix and texteditors By Rumrunner/VOID l On the Amiga the choice of a texteditor is fairly simple. Both CygnusEditor and GoldEd is up to every imaginable task. On Unix I have yet to come across an editor I really like. There are basically two kinds of editors available on Unix. There are the ones for your regular tty (80*25, 80*50 and whatever), and those for X. Some also works in both environments. You have an editor named nano that runs in textmode, which is fast and easy if yoUXW 0u just need to type in some lines of text. However, it lacks features like copy and paste. You can cut a whole line and then insert it, but that's all. You can also use a program like gpm which gives you a mouse on your textmode console, and enables copy and paste. However, it doesn't always work decent. Ofcourse, we have the common editors like vi, vim, and elvis, which are useless. They work in two modes, commandmode and editmode. Depending on version, patchlevel and whatever, youUYU start (usually) in commandmode, and have to type the letter i to be able to insert text, but hold on a second. In some of the said editors, you first have to mode to the line and place in line where you want to enter text, since moving with the arrowkeys change from insertmode to commandmode. Most of these editors also require you to change from insertmode to commandmode (by pressing escape), before you are allowed to delete text entered on another line. In other words, if you noticUZe a typing error two lines up and move there with the arrowkeys, you have to enter commandmode to delete the errors, if the editor doesn't change to commandmode when moving. Some people say that you can work faster with this type of editor than others, since you for instance can use letterkeys to jump around in your text once you're in commandmode. That's pure shite if you ask me, pressing escape, then moving with the letterkeys, then pressing i for insertmode is nowhere near as fastU[y as using the arrowkeys. And even if it was, I would never become used to doing that. Where do you find a keyboard without arrowkeys by the way? I've never seen one. And I don't care if arrowkeys doesn't work with telnet if you're on this and that computer, and the remote computer where you run the editor is this and that model with whatever shite running. I edit my texts on the computer I'm sitting infront of. Some of these editors also have graphical modes (for use in X). There's U\x gvim, kvim, and also a vimpart for use in the regular kde-editors. Neither of them are any better than the textmode ones. Kde, the K Desktop Environment has alot of editors. There's kedit, kwrite, kate and some others meant for special purposes, like writing webpages and stuff like that. Note though that all of these editors use the same basic editor and just add buttons and gadgets, and perhaps some more functions. Kate works decent, it handles several files at a time, it has syntaU]Zrx- highlighting for those who find that important, and, as every graphical editor, they support copy and paste. Another nifty function is that you can set marks in your text and jump from mark to mark, just like in Asm-One. What made me too mad about the editor to use it in the end was the autoindenting. I like editors having some kind of autoindent. The Asm-One editor is perhaps the best. It indents to where you started writing at the previous line, and if you press enter without enU^{Qtering anything on the new line. It stops indenting and also remove the tab on the empty line. CygnusEditor also does a good job, it keeps the indenting from previous line if you hold down alt while pressing enter. What kate and the other kde editors do is to indent everything to the closest line above where you have some text. This means that if you have finished a paragraph, pressed enter once, removed the indent and then press enter again, it indents to where you started your textU _ two lines up. This got me so pissed that I only use this editor for converting between lf and cr/lf linebreaks nowadays. If I really need to use a textmodeeditor, I prefer one named le. It can only have one file open at the time, but you have the possibility of marking, copying and pasting text, and you can also use this editor as a hexeditor, if you start it with le -h. The hexeditingpart is fairly nice. After a while, I have started to use the editor Emacs. If you have ever run U ` memacs coming with WorkBench3.1, you know some of what it's about, however, Emacs has more functions. The biggest drawback with Emacs is that it's big and slow, however not as slow as kate if you don't run kde as your windowmanager. Strangely enough, it's faster in X than it is in textmode. There are some things about Emacs also that pisses me off. If you name a file #?.c, #?.s and the like, it uses some autoformatting on the text, I almost didn't recognise my own code. What I did aU a,bout this was to find the directory where Emacs stores it's modes, and renamed the directory named progmodes to shittyprogmodes or similar. I lose autoindent but atleast I recognise the code I've just written. There are also strange keycombinations to do things in Emacs, for instance, for opening a file, you press control-x control-f, then enter the filename or press enter to get a directorylisting. You save with control-x control-s. To close some of the opened files, you enter alt-U bx kill-some-buffers. If you want to mark text, you start the markarea with control-space and move to the end, press control-w to cut, alt-w to copy, and when you want to paste text, you do it with control-y. The marked area, doesn't change colour like in CygnusEditor, but it does if you mark it with the mouse, which also is possible. If you mark text with the mouse, and don't cut or copy it, you can also paste it into other programs by pressing the middle mousebutton where you want tU Ghe text entered. You also have to paste into the editor from other programs this way, as it doesn't use any other common clipboard, supporting control-c, control-v and the likes. First of all, I'd like to remind the fellow readers of the following fact: Breakpoint is looking for Amiga Sceners to join the Organizing Team for years now, yet nobody has applied. It's a shame that the worlds biggest demo party with tons of great Amiga releases still does not have an Amiga scener actually running the Amiga compos. Year after year, wvywLe have to find a PC scener who accepts to do the Amiga compo even if he isn't himself active on that platform (anymore). And after the party, that organizer gets constantly bashing as a thank you for doing anothers scene work. This sucks. As you know, this year Chaos who used to be an Amiga scener in the past had taken over this job, simply because he was the only one in our competition team with decent clues about the platform. He should not have voiced his personal opinion about avzVn entry while being the organizer of that compo, and he got clearly told about this mistake by the rest of the Breakpoint team. But still: Without chaos there would have been no Amiga Compos at all, simply because there would have been nobody skilled enough to RUN the Amiga compos. Chaos enabled the Amiga Compos to take place at this years Breakpoint, and he deserves some respect for doing that. I didn't speak with Chaos directly yet, but I assume after this bashing this probably wasv{{ the first and last time he was willing to do the Amiga compos. So, the Amiga scene now has about 10 months left to get their act together and get someone to exchange the fun of being a BP visitor with the hard job of being a Breakpoint Compo Organizer, getting beaten up on the slightest mistake one makes. Breakpoint was created from scratch by someone who has never been an Organizer of Mekka or Symposium - me. I've never been an Amiga scener, but come from the C64, and I've never visited Symposium. Our 40+ people organizing team consists of just one person who used to be an Symposium organizer - and that's Chaos, who you currently are bashing. Since I started an informatics-course at Hyskolen I Vestfold, I bought first an old pentium2 to do some schoolwork on, then later a laptop, to make work at the schoolplace easier. Coming from the Amigascene and being a coder, I had to look into intelassembler after awhile. To put it short, I have never seen anything that ugly on computers before, apart from the Windows openingscreen. Let's start off brutally by compa ^ring some instructions : 1 move.b (a0),d0 (68000) mov al,[ebx] (intel) move.w (a0),d0 (68000) mov ax,[ebx] (intel) move.l (a0),d0 (68000) mov eax,[ebx] (intel) 0 Clearly the intelprocessor's instructionset was never meant to handle longwords, or doublewords as intel likes to call them. Having a register ax (wordlength) and referring to al for the low part and ah for the high part is something I can deal with, but when you have to also use e infront to make the proceJessor understand that you want the longword, it's too messy. What will happen when intelprocessors get registers of two longwords length? My bet is that they will throw in even more letters in the register names, instead of specifying length in the instruction. Moving on to comparisons : 1 cmp.b #4,(a0) (68000) cmp byte [ebx],4 (intel) cmp.w #4,(a0) (68000) cmp word [ebx],4 (intel) cmp.l #4,(a0) (68000) cmp dword [ebx],4 (intel) 2 The intelinstructionset should reZally have gone in the thrashcan long time ago if you ask me. You can work the intel way here, but it looks horrible. Also, in comparisons, I usually want postincrement. I have not found a way to do this with intelprocessors yet, and I doubt if it's even supported. d Where do you want your program to run? There are differences in the 68000 processorseries that make programs crash on other processors than it was written for. I'm not thinking of timingloops here, rather what you caXDn do in user and what you can do in supervisormodes. Once you get into this, there's really not much you have to consider, I for one have never had the need of writing to the statusregister in usermode on 020+. Look at the intelprocessors, and there's lots more to take into consideration. If you want your program to work on computers back to 486, you only have eight registers to play with : 1 ax, bx, cx, dx, si, di, sp, bp 0 If you use new registers introduced later, things wilWl go down the bog. It's on one hand excellent that intel introduced new registers, but even if you lost all compatibility, they should have come up with a new instructionset at the same time. After all, even though I like the instructionset on 6502, I don't need it on a longword-processor. d It is possible to do stuff if you want to, even on intel One of the first pieces of code I put together on intel was a cgiprogram for use with the apache webserver. Cgi is rather nice, you cavn write it in whatever you want to, from assembled/compiled languages to scriptlanguages like perl, python, and even yabasic. Php is the easy alternative today, but even though I like it in some areas, it's not quite speedy. Things take alot of time, and you shouldn't have to use a new huge computer to chuck out some simple dynamic webpages to people. I won't even consider shite like asp and asp.net here, since they are even slower than php, have ugly syntax, and mostly run on Windowy[lscomputers, even though you can run asp.net with the module from the mono-project for apache on unix. d Tools please Well, there are no decent assembler for intelcomputers, atleast not that I have found. The best is perhaps microasm for Windows, but that's out of the question since I don't run Windows on my computers. (Well I have a small partition left with the Windows that came preinstalled on my laptop, wonder when that was last booted). On linux/unix, you have two choices. Ei 6gother you can go for the gnu assembler called as, which comes preinstalled on most linuxes, or you can go for something like nasm. The gnu assembler has it's own syntax. You see, unlike the 68000-series, there's not just one way to write intelassembler. The gnu syntax is something like an "I wish I was an 68000" thingy. They have put length in the instruction, and also use source,destination instead of destination,source like intel likes to do. So you could change the examples above a IA( bit and halfway make it look like it's 68000-assembler. If you have ever written a line of assembler on Amiga or other 68000-computers, you will laugh however, it sucks perhaps even more than intel's syntax. By the way, the reason for making this strange syntax for intelopcodes is supposed to be because SystemV Unix used this syntax sometime. Then it ofcourse lives on in the unixworld, as much other stuff that should never be an issue. Nasm uses the regular intelsyntax, and works m 2Rtore or less as it should, that's the best I can say about it. It's a commandlineassembler, and as you know if you have read previous codingarticles from me, I don't like that. No easy debugging/singlestepping/tracing, memorypeeking/poking or saving parts of memory to file. Especially when you are new to a processor this is invaluable. I recently came across Yasm, another assembler that looks and works just like Nasm, however, it's a bit better. Atleast it doesn't chuck lots of junk  .ϛinto your files, like sections containing the name of the assembler and such. So files get a little smaller, and ofcourse I use it now, both to get smaller files and also so I won't have to edit my files with a hexeditor later on. Never will I accept that a junkassembler tucks it's name in my code. d^B[004pY.^False statements l The following are false statements about Void and also corrected information. Void has never released a 4k intro with the name of Bobshow, like seen in diskmags and also on internet. However, we have released a 4k intro called Bobshower. That's shower as in what you stand under and water runs out of to get you clean. It's not show as in something a rockgroup would present. Void's production named Voids Are Back In Town is not a dentro, it's a demo. I spotted this error in pouet.net. The same demo, Voids Are Back In Town was not released in 2006 as also stated on pouet.net. The demo was released in the evening of 31.th of December 2005. I don't write this to punish anyone, I simply write it to correct false information I have found, just like LSD did in Grapevine a long time ago. F1 and F2 changes modules. This arrangement looks tidy, but the small part of the screen which is dedicated to the menu makes it a little bit untidy, and it's a little hard to get the overview. But anyway, there's only 20 articles all in all, so you don't get lost. Upon selecting an article, the page is loaded and the whole screen isբo# dedicated to the text. This is nice and clean. What however is worse is that everything is written in uppercase. Without having disassembled the mag, I guess the graphician got tired of making fonts, and stopped after uppercase- letters were finished. The quality of articles are varying. My favourites among them are comparisons between Noisetracker 1.2 and 2.0, and an article about PowerPacker3.0, the first PowerPacker which wasn't free/shareware. There are also interviews which ar[ te interesting to read for people interested in scenehistory. The bad thing about the articles, except for being printed in uppercase only, is the spelling. There are lots and lots of spellingerrors, but hey, perhaps they wrote it after some strong drinks, like I'm used to. The modules in the mag are of decent quality. There are two of them to select from like already indicated. Dunno who made them since the mag don't give credits. The mag features cliparts, and they are big clipart֤Ws with lots of colours, this is perhaps the best about the mag. Ofcourse, since they don't keep menulines and other statusfields onscreen when viewing articles they have enough room to use big cliparts. This is perhaps one of the most advanced features of the mag. d #42 by Talent Well, this is a mag like we all know it. Upon startup, a statusline pops up at the top of the screen, and a menu at the bottom. The mainpart of the screen, is ofcourse dedicated Mto showing the articles. First, it's covered with a logo telling clearly the name of the producers, Talent. It reminds me alot of the way Raw did it most issues, except they usually had a picture from Fairfax with other motifs than a logo with the name of the group. (By the way, does anybody remember the picture with a man on a horse, looking at the Titanic lying in the mountains, I don't remember which issue it was featured in, but it's one of the best fullscreen cliparts I have see/n in any mag still today). Right, pressing the deletekey or clicking on "Menu" in the bottompanel reveals the articlelist. There's alot to choose from, from the compulsory creditslist to news and scenerelated articles. What first caught my eye was the series of articles about Andromeda. There's a complete list of mainproductions, and interview with Hydra and so on.
